Scope: Telescopes, the cosmos and a journey.

James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. All of these man-made tools have brought us the most beautiful images of our universe. They allow us to see beyond what humanity ever thought possible. They also serve as a reminder of how immensely small we are compared to our cosmic surroundings. I personally wished to celebrate and expand of the breath-taking images that these lonely stellar travelers, which is why I created Scope.

Scope is a set of tarot cards which highlights some of the various images taken by the telescopes in their journey through the cosmos. Scope also includes a double-sided poster of the images and information about what is depicted in the image. Finally, the package also includes a booklet with information about the telescopes.

Initial Concept

My tarot card design concept draws its inspiration from astrology, where I incorporate captivating images of celestial bodies found in space, such as nebulas, supernovas, stars, and black holes. These cosmic elements are be linked to specific tarot cards, such as the moon, the sun, the fool, and death, among others. To bring this concept to life, I used NASA’s copyright-free imagery as a foundation for my design.

  • Visual Aesthetic

Visually, I decided to infuse a touch of psychedelia into the design, creating a slightly distorted and surreal aesthetic. This was achieved by placing the images into photoshop and—to put it simply— playing around with various settings until I get the desired visual. This is best shown on my design for the card's back.

For packaging, I opted for the classic match box design, as it makes for easier manufacturing. The inside tray includes a layer with a string attached to facilitate the removal of the card deck, as the dimensions of the tray are made for the card sizes.

As for the visual design of the packaging, I took advantage of the logo's compact and rectangular shape to make it big and recognizable on the packaging.

Booklet

The booklet included in Scope contains information on what tarot cards are, the names of the cards (with the current 3 cards highlighted) and information about the 3 telescopes who took the images used in the card deck. In an extended version, the booklet will also provide information about each card in their own page and how to read the tarot results.
